Keeping Families Close When They Need It Most

The Ployhar Family

Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area:
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area (RMHC) surrounds families with the support they need to be near hospitals and care for their seriously ill or injured child. Our three programs are: Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, and Ronald McDonald Hospitality Carts. Between all three programs, we serve an average of 14,000 families a year. Descriptions of the programs are below.

Ronald McDonald House:
The 72-Room Ronald McDonald House is located in Salt Lake City within miles of major regional hospitals. Families of pediatric patients can stay together while their child is getting the treatment they need. Not only does the House offer the 72-bedrooms, some that can sleep up to 5 people, there are also large gathering spaces, a large kitchen, a theater room, play room, game room, work-out room and more. We are also excited to have opened a new backyard park this year to complement the existing outdoor courtyard where families can congregate and play together.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms:
Ronald McDonald House Charities operates 2 Family Rooms located within Primary Children’s Hospital. The 2nd Level Family Room serves parents with a child being treated in the Pediatric ICU, Neuro Trauma Unit, and Cardiac ICU. While the 2nd Level Family Room is just for parents, our Family Room on Level 3 is available for families, children and guests to visit together. Parents are steps away from their child being treated and can access showers, a combined 8 overnight sleep rooms, a fully-stocked kitchen, computers, crafts and more.

Ronald McDonald Hospitality Carts:
Ronald McDonald House Charities operates 2 Hospitality Carts: one at Shriner’s Hospital for Children and one at Ogden Regional Medical Center. These hospitality carts offer pediatric patients and their families snacks, toys, crafts and activities, toiletries, treats and more. Our hospitality cart at Shriner’s Hospital is centrally located and serves all patients from its position in the main lobby. Our cart at Ogden Regional Medical Center serves patients and families on the Newborn ICU, Pediatric Unit and Labor and Delivery and is mobile allowing it to go directly to patient rooms.

Ronald McDonald House Charities is a trusted partner among all of our stakeholders: our hospital partners, the families we serve, and our donors. In fact, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area has consistently been given the highest 4-star rating by Charity Navigator and was selected as business.org’s 2018 “Best Charity to Donate to in Utah”

Each family we serve has a unique story. Below is the story of the Ployhar’s, who stayed with Ronald McDonald House while their young daughter, Kenzan, was fighting stage 4 Neuroblastoma.

The Ployhar’s Story:
One family we served last year is the Ployhar’s. Last year, when they were able to go home after staying 332 nights at the Ronald McDonald House, they shared their story with us.

“Kenzan was diagnosed with stage 4 high risk Neuroblastoma in September of 2018. She was life-flighted from her home in Montana to Salt Lake City for cancer treatment. Her treatment has included 6 aggressive rounds of chemotherapy, surgery to remove the bulk of her tumor, 2 stem cell transplants and radiation followed by 6 months of antibody therapy. She has been through a lot since she first arrived in Salt Lake even becoming a big sister.

Kenzan’s mom was in a high-risk pregnancy when she was diagnosed and had Baby Marin 9 days later. He was 6 weeks premature and spent about a month in the NICU at a different hospital. Kenzan has endured her entire treatment process with all the sass and smiles that any 4-5-year-old should have and has made many friends along her journey. The Ronald McDonald House has given all of us a comforting and fun place to be during this past year. They have truly helped in so many, many ways. Kenzan still has a long road to recovery, but will captivate each and every person she meets with her strength and stamina.”

There are thousands more stories like Kenzan’s. The supporters of RMHC make this kind of support possible.
