Meet Joshua Gardiner, a Nanci’s Gift Scholar and recent graduate of Hampton University!
During his senior year of high school, Joshua applied to and was awarded a Nanci’s Gift Scholarship. As a student at Bishop O’Connell Catholic High School in Virginia, he was involved in many activities and maintained a 3.1 GPA.
Joshua was in 9th grade when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The year before, he lost a grandmother to breast cancer and was devastated at the news of his mom’s diagnosis.
When students apply for a scholarship, they must write an essay on how breast cancer has affected their life. These essays heart-felt, emotional and impactful. Joshua’s was no different. He talked about his fears and the stress he was under while watching his mother go through chemotherapy. At such a young age, he was constantly worrying about his mom and that her cancer would return. But he also wrote about overcoming obstacles in his life and that going through difficult challenges has only made him stronger and more determined to become a success in life.
Joshua wrote “there is nothing fair about cancer and no one deserves it. I know things will be ok, because I will not give cancer that much power.” These are amazing insights coming from such a young person.
Joshua entered into the class of 2020 at Hampton University in the fall of 2016 and has never looked back! He took summer classes his freshman year and again during his junior year. During his sophomore year, he participated in the SHPEP (Summer Health Professions Education Program) at Rutgers University. And during the COVID19 Pandemic that struck the United States earlier this year, Joshua continued to persevere and finish his classes, study for his exams, and prepare for the MCAT’s. Yes, he has decided to become a doctor! He graduated on May 10 (although the ceremonies had to be postponed) with a GPA of 3.4 and took his MCAT’s in July. He is currently enrolled in a special masters program at Georgetown University concentrating in Physiology and Biophysics. He has applied to several medical schools, including: Drexel, Morehouse, Meharry, and Georgetown.
Nanci’s Gift couldn’t be prouder of this young man than if we were his parents. It is an honor to provide students like Joshua with $1000.00 every year they remain in school, helping them pay for things like books, computers, dorm furnishings, clothing, and whatever else they may need.
Please give to our Scholarship Award Program so we can continue to help students like Joshua. We cannot do it without your generosity.
Thank you and God bless you.
