Mentoring Matters! Our Match of the Year Shares their POV.
Mentor Dan : A friend invited me to attend a Big Brothers Big Sisters event and I heard firsthand about the impact that mentoring can have and the difference relationships can make in the life of a child. I decided to sign up and within a few months I was told I have a potential match. It was honestly a little scary at first because I knew this was a lot of responsibility but once I met Zach I knew this would a good fit. He and I have so much in common. For example we both enjoy similar foods and even similar birthdays. We’ve known each other now for four amazing years and I feel so fortunate to know Zach. For the last few years I’ve been living on the Big Island so we’ve been staying in touch by Facetime and text, but I also fly back to Oahu for work so we meet up when I’m on island. Zach is just like family, and recently when I got married he and his mom attended our wedding on the Big Island. It was a small reception due to Covid so they were in the party of 20 people we invited to attend. It’s life changing for both you and the child.
From Zach: Dan is great. He’s taught me to never give up and has always supported me. He’s helped me with my swimming and even taught me how to shave. Dan is also a volunteer firefighter which is something that I’m now interested in pursuing becoming a firefighter. Big Brothers Big Sisters program is fun and great to have someone in your life like Dan that cares about you.
