Small Charity With A Major Impact
Since 2002 the Twelfth Street Food Pantry has been providing pre-packed bags of nutritional food and other essentials to those needing help throughout the tri-county area. During this COVID-19 pandemic, we like so many other pantries had to make the decision to stay open or close our doors. We have remained open taking all the precautions recommended by the CDC. Drive-up and walk-up service is being provided as well as home delivery to over 70 households and bags of food for the homeless on the streets of Detroit. We have initiated semi-choice to accommodate our client’s ability to transport the food given while ensuring basic nutritional foods are provided to everyone. Everyone coming for help gets help.
Now more than ever the Twelfth Street Food Pantry is needed to keep food on the tables of hundreds of households feeling the financial strain of this pandemic. Our clients avg. income is less than $1200/month and many don’t eat if we can’t provide them food. At the same time, we must protect our volunteers by providing them the PPE necessary to protect themselves and our clients, modifying our operations and procedures, training our volunteers to new protocols and constantly sanitizing our facility and equipment. We know this is repeated in thousands of food pantries and food banks throughout the country. We are working hard to keep our operations going while adhering to these new standards.
With the help of Gleaners and Forgotten Harvest we can provide more meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, cereal, dairy, eggs, and much more. With up to 20 dedicated volunteers, we can keep up with the many tasks required to prepare, distribute and store the foods to be given. We have over 30 volunteers but to meet the distancing requirements, we have restricted the number of volunteers in the pantry.
Our clients tell us how they rely on the food we provide. The following is a sampling of the comments we hear from our clients:
-- One client told us she had just received a shut-off notice for her gas during one
of our coldest periods last winter. She stated “ I have food so now I will have
the money to keep the heat on. Thank God you are here
-- Another told us without the food we provide, she and her family would go
-- A homeless client told us he hadn’t eaten for 4 days and he didn’t know when
he would be able to eat again. I’m so happy to see you
We wouldn’t be here to service the surrounding community without your CFC donations. Your donations mean a family can be fed AND have heat, a child can have breakfast and nutritious meals and not a diet of junk food, the hungry on the streets of Detroit can have food and other essentials to sustain them. Families are not going hungry because of you and the support you provide us. We hope you will keep the hunger away from the doorsteps of our community by supporting the Twelfth Street Food Pantry with your donations.
Your donations help our small pantry make a major impact in our community. No one is paid by the pantry and 100% of your donation is used to feed the hungry. With your support we have provided over 36,000 nutritious meals and over 250,000 lbs. of food this year.
We thank you not only for your donations but your contributions to our nation as you perform your tasks daily during these unusual times.
Be Safe and Thank you, CFC from the Twelfth Street Food Pantry and our Clients
