There is no stereotypical “homeless person.”
Casey, a successful professional athlete, suffered sports-related traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) that resulted in a seizure disorder requiring ongoing medication and monitoring. When a close family member died, Casey lost his support and housing, and ended up living on the street.
Although not a drinker, Casey turned to alcohol to cope with his emotional and physical pain and was unable to manage his medication. Then, a seizure landed Casey in the hospital. Hospital staff knew discharging Casey with nowhere to safely recover meant he’d be back, and in worse shape.
A hospital case manager mentioned the John Parvensky Stout Street Recuperative Care Center. Within 48 hours, Casey had a place to recover, get sober, and begin rebuilding his life.
The Recuperative Care Center, funded through charitable gifts like yours, is Colorado’s first facility to provide short-term, special-purpose housing for people experiencing homelessness who need time, healthcare, and other resources to recuperate. Patients like Casey benefit from integrated medical and behavioral healthcare and services, including help in accessing disability benefits and housing resources.
Today, Casey has moved into his own apartment at a Coalition-owned residential property. He still returns to the Recuperative Care Center to support other patients in their recovery and to visit staff whom he credits for assisting him on his path to stability.
In each person who needs our help we see an individual striving for a better life. With your help, 16,000 people like Casey will move toward lasting stability this year.
With warmest thanks for your generous support!
