No-cost mobile market gives disabled veteran, neighbor ingredients for shared meal

Neighbors Bonnie (right) and Robert (left) visited the Food Bank's no-cost mobile market in front of Poudre High School in March. Both said the market helps them to have the food they need to thrive.

When neighbors Robert and Bonnie pull up to the Food Bank’s no-cost mobile market, Robert is already planning out the week’s menu.
The neighbors carpool to the market, where there are a variety of no-cost food items that are boxed up and loaded directly into Bonnie’s car. Robert, 55, loves to cook with his wife, Mary. The mobile market makes it possible for them to create made-from-scratch meals.
“I’m super grateful. As a disabled vet, I don’t have a huge amount of income and this makes my quality of life vastly larger.”
For his neighbor’s part, Bonnie, 53, said she receives SNAP benefits but the amount she gets only covers the cost to buy meat. Thanks to the mobile market, she can still have fruit and vegetables in her diet.
“I probably wouldn’t eat a whole lot if it wasn’t for this,” Bonnie said.
As carpool partners to the pantry, the neighbors also look out for each other in another way. When Robert and his wife finish making some of their favorite dishes from mobile market ingredients, like lasagna and beef stew, they’re sure to call Bonnie up and see if she can join them for dinner.
“We call her up and tell her what we’re serving,” Robert said. “And she’s like, ‘I’ll be right over.’”
