Perched on a hillside, above 10,000 feet in the Peruvian Andes, the people of Cruz Pata have always had to haul water for cooking, cleaning, and bathing. Women would walk two hours up the mountainside to a fresh water spring, often making this trip two or three times a day.

For years political officials had promised solutions that never materialized, so the community took action. They got in touch with our local partner and together we supported the community to build their own clean water micro-utility. Digging trenches, laying pipes, and installing meters on each house, the community themselves built their own system and through that process learned how to manage and maintain it. On October 3rd, 2024 Cruz Pata inaugurated their new system with water flowing directly to the homes of all 131 people.

One woman shared with us that she is already using the huge time savings to work more with her crops and noted that because it takes way less time to cook a meal, she and other mothers are finding it easier to get their children to school on time.

Green Empowerment collaborates with remote communities, like Cruz Pata, all around the world to build renewable energy and clean water infrastructure. Water and power are foundational for health, livelihoods, education, and gender equality, and are crucial for climate resiliency. We empower communities to build solutions in harmony with their environment so both people and the planet can thrive. Join us.
