In 2009, our CEO, renowned dog trainer Carol Borden, trained a German Shepherd named Bessie to assist a young man paralyzed in a high school football accident. After witnessing how Bessie helped restore his independence and quality of life, Carol founded Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs to give the same life-changing gift to others. Since then, operating entirely on donations and grants, we’ve trained almost 1,000 service dogs, including the #1 US Service Dog and the nation’s Top American Hero Dog. Not one of the hundreds of recipients we have helped has ever had to pay for his or her service dog.
