Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project
Lillian Aponte, Children's Program Manager:
"Our team goes into shelter facilities in Arizona and provides children with “Know Your Rights” presentations. Also our team represents these children as “friend of the court “in juvenile court dockets and then offers them direct representation in circumstances where there may be relief available. They have either suffered some type of abandonment, some type of abuse, some type of violence. They have come to this country and they’re here alone. They are often scared. When I walk to the ICE facility and I first meet eyes with that child — and I know what they’ve gone through, they’ve probably been in detention for months, for a year — and we’ve been working together, and while their case may not be complete, they are walking that day out in freedom. And for me that moment is extremely powerful."
