“Statistically more than two thirds of our clients are of NON-caucasian ethnicity (mostly Hispanic with a handful of African American families). Approximately 150 of the families we serve report $0 monthly household income, while over 400 families report an income of $1000 per month or less. They frequently mention significant food insecurity and lack of knowledge of where to find help. They also frequently can’t receive assistance from the other pantry in town due to lack of a current ID. We are the only pantry in Plainview affiliated with the HPFB. We strive to help our clients keep food on the table. For many of these families, a large portion of their meals comes from our distributions. It is our duty and privilege to make sure everyone has access to nutritious food for their family, especially those who frequently fall through the cracks. I recently had an opportunity to help a homeless woman get an ID, a SS card, food stamps, indigent health care, and more. While working with her, I discovered that people who look and smell a certain way are treated as less than human. It was an eye-opening experience to see that a person desperately trying to improve her life situation couldn’t do it without an advocate. This renewed my resolve to make sure EVERY family that comes through our pantry receives the assistance they need in a loving, respectful, and caring way. We want them to have a holiday meal.”
