Gemma, a pit bull mix, came to us on Halloween last year from the pound. Sadly, Gemma was adopted a couple of times and even went to a foster home, but each time she was returned mainly due to her excessive barking towards other animals.
Poor Gemma just couldn’t catch a break. She waited at the shelter for months. She did become best friends with Bluey, another down-on-his-luck dog with no prospects, and they bonded. They were an odd pair, Gemma with her short, stubby legs and thick body, wrestling with the much taller and lankier Bluey, who stood twice as tall as her. It was their friendship that likely kept them both sane during their long stay at the shelter.
When Bluey finally got adopted, although excited for him, we worried what would happen to Gemma. But then, it happened. Gemma got an application that was perfect. He visited every day for a week to walk her. He seemed to understand that she would not always be an easy dog, but that she was full of love and would be a loyal companion. When her adoption day arrived, we watched her walk out the door for hopefully the final time.
