When Susan took her son to the immunologist, the doctor observed his mother’s symptoms – fatigue, sore throat, fever, and frequent infections, and ordered bloodwork. Results revealed common variable immune deficiency (CVID), the most frequently diagnosed primary immunodeficiency (PI).
Next, she researched PI and sought resources for help through this unfamiliar condition. She discovered the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) and requested assistance from IDF’s Peer Mentor program, attended IDF education and support group meetings, and served as an IDF plasma ambassador.
Talking with others who have PI through IDF helped normalize the condition, and Susan became more involved as an IDF Peer Mentor and IDF Get Connected Group Leader.
