Sofia, a mama dog who arrived at Maui Humane Society, was found near Iao Valley in a heartbreaking condition. She was malnourished, covered in scars, and suffering from hair loss and worms. Most tragic of all, it was clear she had recently nursed puppies, leaving us to wonder where her babies were.
Around the same time, two orphaned puppies — Pickles and Peanut Butter — were found in a park. Our team introduced them to Sofia, hoping she would become their surrogate mom… and to our relief, she did. Sofia instantly took the pups in, providing them with the care and love they desperately needed.
We are happy to share that once Pickles and Peanut Butter were old enough they were selected to participate in our Wings of Aloha Transfer Program, along with Sofia, and were flown to our partners on the mainland for a chance at better lives.
Sofia, Pickles and Peanut Butter are just three of the approximately 5,000+ animals cared for annually by Maui Humane Society. As the main open shelter on Maui, we provide lifesaving services such as emergency rescues, spay and neuter clinics, pet resource assistance for families with pets facing financial hardships, and more! With your compassionate support, we can meet the needs of Maui's animals in need, giving them a happy ending to their story.
