Takota, a 6-year-old Pit Bull mix, came to MCPAWS Animal Shelter in January 2024. His family lost their pet-friendly housing and were forced to surrender Takota because they couldn’t find any housing that would allow them to keep him. Surrendering Takota was a very difficult decision, but they knew that bringing him to MCPAWS would ensure that he would be well cared for and loved until he found his new home.
Takota quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite due to his sweet personality and full-body wiggle-butt hellos. Since Takota was stressed at the shelter, he stayed in a room separate from the rest of the dog population to help him settle in. Getting to spend time in staff offices and going for walks with volunteers were a part of his daily routine. Takota even enjoyed time in a foster home to get a break from the shelter, where he showered his foster in affection and delightfully snored during his naps on the couch.
Months went by and no one came to adopt Takota, despite his lovable personality. After 164 days of being at MCPAWS, he found the best home we could have asked for. Takota’s original family was able to secure dog-friendly housing and they came back to MCPAWS to adopt him! Takota was over the moon to be reunited with his family, and showered them in kisses. The MCPAWS staff gave him happy, tearful goodbyes as he left the shelter for good.
We recently received an update on Takota from his family:
“He is doing very well and has settled back in as if he was never gone. He sleeps with his boy every night and has found his spot back on the couch.”
Here at MCPAWS, we hold ourselves to the highest standards of care. All pets are given safe shelter, medical care, food, clean water, exercise, and socialization. But more than that, the dogs and cats at MCPAWS are given extra effort and dedication. Staff, volunteers, fosters, donors, and supporters work together and create a community to ensure that every pet gets the love and attention that they need. Having to surrender a pet is a hard choice to have to make, but having a safe space like MCPAWS to ensure their care is made the highest priority can help ease these difficult and stressful situations. We love our shelter dogs and cats and we only want the best for them.
