On June 5th, 2023, Wal-Mart employees in NW Oklahoma City called animal welfare to report a U-Haul truck abandoned in their parking lot. The truck sounded and smelled like it was full of animals. Authorities cut the padlock and discovered 36 dogs and puppies inside the sweltering truck. OKC Animal Welfare officers registered the temperature inside the cargo area of the truck at over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The dogs did not have access to food or water. Three of the 36 dogs were suffering from heat stroke. Unfortunately, 1 dog passed away due to the severity of its illness.
Of the 36 dogs rescued from the truck, OK Humane took in 17. One of the dogs taken in by OK Humane was pregnant and gave birth to puppies, bringing the total to 23.
OK Humane is entirely foster-based. Our community of fosters banded together in order to help these pets in their time of need. The time these dogs spent in foster homes gave them the love and support they needed to recover before finding their forever homes. The culprits who abandoned the dogs were arrested and charged with 36 counts of animal cruelty.
Many of the dogs rescued from the U-Haul needed medical treatment that went beyond the standard vaccines, preventatives, and spay and neuter surgery. For more extensive medical cases, OK Humane relies on our Angel Fund. The Angel Fund is supported through public donations that help us provide treatment for animals who arrive suffering from abuse, accidents and neglect, including broken bones, severe lacerations, mange, gunshots, and other medical emergencies. After the dogs rescued from the U-Haul recovered in the OK Humane program, all the pets found their happily-ever-after homes. They can now love and be loved by families of their own.
The goal of OK Humane is to change the landscape of animal welfare in Oklahoma, making it a more humane place for pets. Since our founding in 2007, we have impacted more than 25,000 animals through our programs and services. Our programs include a low-cost spay and neuter clinic for our communities, an adoption program to find animals forever homes, a neonate program to save puppies and kittens under six weeks old, an animal advocacy program to serve victims of domestic violence and their pets, and a statewide initiative to bring services to rural communities.
The Oklahoma Humane Society’s mission is to enrich the communities it serves by promoting the well-being of animals. Our journey begins and ends with love. We love animals and believe that Oklahoma will see a day when every healthy and adoptable pet finds a home. Visit okhumane.org to learn more.
