Baykeeper’s investigations revealed that the city of San Francisco and the SFPUC are illegally dumping at least 73 million gallons of untreated raw sewage into the Bay each year – enough to fill 110 Olympic sized swimming pools. Baykeeper is pursuing legal action in partnership with the EPA and State of California to hold the city and SFPUC responsible for cleaning up this pollution that harms the Bay and makes the water unsafe for recreation. San Francisco’s sewage pollution is also the biggest contributor of nitrogen and phosphorus that fuel harmful algal blooms in the Bay. Baykeeper’s legal action against San Francisco will reduce these pollutants, protecting residents from contamination and marine life from another fish kill.
