The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.

Employment is a pillar of our American dream. Through our jobs we better ourselves, sharpen our skills and provide for our families. In the US, 70% of people who are blind are unemployed. At the Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc. we provide opportunities for people to not only work but discover themselves and thrive. Our objective is employment, but our mission is empowerment. Trieva S. is a great example, she was excelling at her dream job as a preschool teacher, self-reliant and independent. Then she began to get migraine headaches that started to affect her vision and she slowly began to go blind. After 15 years in her career, she was let go and faced unemployment. "I am the perfect example that blindness can happen to anyone. . .I was scared and defeated." Then one of her coworkers told her about the Lighthouse and before she knew it, she had a job, a sense of belonging and a new work environment. She can live more independently and prepare for potential career advancement opportunities. The training and accessible work environment at the Lighthouse provided to Trieva and many others, was made possible by community support like yours.
