When we were founded in 1988, most environmental organizations didn’t focus on human rights. Many instead pushed a conservation model that banished Indigenous peoples from their territories. We were the first organization founded on the belief that supporting Indigenous peoples’ rights was the best and fairest way to end deforestation—and fight the climate crisis. We’ve partnered with Indigenous peoples across Central America and the Amazon to achieve landmark victories Including securing land rights for nearly 42 million acres of tropical forests and supporting Indigenous-led monitoring programs to protect 13.7 million acres in the Amazon and Central America. A 2021 scientific study showed that our forest monitoring program—Rainforest Alert—resulted in a 52% reduction of forest loss in the Peruvian Amazon. Today, Rainforest Alert operates in 57 communities in Peru, covering more than 500,000 acres. Learn more at: www.rainforestfoundation.org
