"There was a time in my life when I was working full time but still struggled. It was hard and defeating. I’m not an ask for help sort of person. So when I had to apply for food stamps, it hurt. I had cut every extra in my life I could but still couldn’t keep up with all the bills. I would grocery shop at night, I would talk loudly about my job while cashing out, praying not to get judged. If someone was in line anywhere around me that I knew, I wouldn’t use my card and I’d rather have bills bounce. I'd get comments in weeks I had to stretch because I wasn't buying all healthy food. I'd get comments in weeks I had nothing but healthy food like, “oh I wish I got all that for free.” It was definitely not free. I paid a lot emotionally and mentally. Then debt got paid and things got better and 8 months later I cancelled them. The harsh reality is people need these programs. People need food. People need not to be judged for just trying to feed their kid. So this year I’m donating to help out, to give back in a tiny way."
