When Hurricane Ian, a Category 5 storm, made landfall on the gulf coast of Florida in September 2022, countless pets and families were evacuated and left without shelter in its deadly wake. Many lost everything and had a long, difficult road ahead of them to rebuilding their lives. Hurricane Ian became the fifth-strongest storm ever to strike the United States.
A team of RedRover Responders volunteers deployed to Lee County, Florida – one of the communities hit the hardest by Hurricane Ian – to assist our partners at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA) with providing emergency shelter and daily care for animals impacted by the storm. Our caring team of volunteers gave dozens of evacuated animals the loving attention they needed until they could be reunited with their families.
“We are grateful we can be on the ground helping the ASPCA and other disaster relief teams care for animals affected by Hurricane Ian,” said RedRover Director of Field Services, Beth Gammie. “Working together to help animals in crisis and support the shelter staff in their long days following a disaster is crucial to helping communities in their recovery from such devastation.”
Thanks to the generosity of kindhearted people like you, RedRover is able to be there for the pets and families when disasters like this strike. Thank you for your support and ensuring we can always answer the call to care for animals when they need our help most.
